The concept of personal and societal transformation is a powerful and ever-present force in literature, art, and personal experience. From Ovid’s tales of metamorphosis to Franz Kafka’s depiction of Gregor Samsa’s transformation into an insect, these stories remind us that life is a transformative journey. Burning Man is often described as a transformative experience at the personal and group level, offering a crucible of souls where people shed the dross and reveal their true selves.

“Metamorphoses” is that it has had a profound impact on Western art and literature, with its influence extending beyond the ancient world to the present day. The book has inspired countless works of art, literature, and music, and its stories have been retold and adapted by numerous writers, artists, and filmmakers over the centuries.

Burning Man 2019: Metamorphoses

In 2019, I created a project for Burning Man titled “Metamorphoses”. I used photographs I had taken at previous Burning Man events (2011, 2012-2019) to create gift pendants. These pendants could rotate and reveal a single word. I asked participants to define the word and share what it meant to them.

Through this project, I wanted to explore the art and culture of Black Rock City and share my experiences with others. It was a transformative experience for everyone who participated, and I am grateful for everyone who took part.
